It's a new year and my LilBird excitedly sounded out and read 43 words today. You might say, so what, she's SIX for pete's sake! She was EXCITED about it ... and that is huge. We have pecked at letter recognition and phonics throughout these last couple of years (most recently in between checking blood sugars and marveling over her math skills), but that part of learning to read is "the boring stuff". Today, she KNEW the letters. She KNEW the sounds. She put them together and recognized WORDS. And she was very proud of herself.
I know my blog here has been seriously lacking, but I'll be honest. I've been in a funk with All Things School. New fall plans were politically corrupted and frustratingly postponed. Twelveness has reared it's lazy head and I really, really, really dislike nagging. Then there's diabetes, which just sucks every single day, and lately, every single night - it's exhausting. So, I don't really have any other excuse except that I just didn't want to sit down and gripe, which is all I've felt like doing the past few months. That is not to say there haven't been highlights, and I'll try to get around to recapping those good things. Not today, though. Today, I am going to dwell on a certain number ... 43. And, I am going to cherish it. Tomorrow, I will not expect another 43 words, but rather I will hope for her continued interest and excitement.
(Oh, and my best girl friend withdrew her daughter today from public school to homeschool. She's an amazing mom with a very smart and talented daughter, and I'm SO excited for them!)
